Rough and Damaged Hair Treatment

by Sam Malone

There are so many hair care products available in the market that promise you miracle cures and treatments. Sadly, most of the products provide little of the promised wonders. Consequently, we turn toward doctors and beauticians for treatment, but these treatments may not always work and may even be expensive. In truth, when it comes to good hair, a well-balanced diet, exercise, and a stress-free lifestyle can go a long way in preventing and treating most of your hair problems, and with a little effort, you can find almost everything you need to repair damaged hair right in your kitchens.

What Causes Dry Hair?

Dry and rough hair can become unmanageable as it tends to get frizzy and limp through the day. Exposure to different weather conditions and pollution is one of the major causes for dry, weak, and damaged hair. Other factors that could affect the health of your hair are quick fixes and salon procedures like perming, straightening, hair coloring, and use of highly heated appliances. In addition, as mentioned earlier, one’s body condition related to diet and hormones also play a role in hair growth and health. This makes a nutritious diet that supplies all essential nutrients necessary to keep the hair from becoming dry and rough.

Home Remedies

To begin with, dry and rough hair means that the scalp is not hydrated enough. This requires moisturizing the scalp and hair.

Massaging the scalp with warm oil thrice a week will help treat dry and rough hair. You can massage coconut, olive, almond, or castor into your hair. These oils can be blended with either one or the other to massage the scalp. Warm the oil slightly and apply generously on the scalp and massage well with your finger tips. Allow it to sit for 30 minutes to an hour, and then wash hair with warm water and a good shampoo that does not remove the oil completely. Castor may be viscous and thick, but it replenishes scalp from within and helps to improve dry and rough hair.

You can also make your own herbal oil by boiling Indian gooseberry and holy basil leaves together and allowing it to it settle. Store this in a jar and use it to massage your scalp. The vitamin C in gooseberry adds sheen to the hair and also aids in preventing dandruff and loss of hair. Authentic herbal shampoos are also good for dry and rough hair.

To condition the dry and rough hair, you can whisk an egg in milk and apply it on scalp and hair. Allow it to stay for 20 to 30 minutes; then wash hair as you normally would. Doing this twice a week helps to bring back the bounce and shine in your hair. Egg provides the extra protein that your hair needs.

Two tablespoons of coconut milk and half cup of coconut water can be applied on hair after shampooing to condition the hair. Before the final rinse, apply this mix and leave it in for five minutes, and the wash with clear water. This will add volume to dry and limp hair.

Yoghurt or mayonnaise can also be applied to dry hair. Allow it to sit for half an hour and then wash it off with cold water.

Tips:

  • Hot water can be damaging to the scalp and hair, so always use warm or cool water to rinse and wash your hair.
  • Avoid using hair drying equipments and other styling products as they can rob the hair of natural oils and make it dry and rough.
  • Rub the scalp gently after a wash and comb the hair with your fingers.
  • Use a broad-toothed comb to prevent hair loss and brush hair regularly to improve blood circulation.
  •  Eat well and exercise regularly.

If you find that the condition of your hair has not yet improved, speak with a doctor. Dry, rough, and damaged hair could be an indication of a hormonal imbalance or a deficiency that might need medical attention.
