Treatment for Excessive Belching

by Kevin Pederson
The medical term for the common belch or burp is aerophagia. Though it is not an illness, it can be quite uncomfortable and embarrassing. There are several excessive belching causes and it is important to identify the source of your problem in order to ease this condition.

  • Check your Diet: Belching is usually caused by the excessive intake of gaseous food such as sodas, raw fruits, fruit juices like apple juice, lentils etc. Keep a track of your diet for a few days to see which types of food cause maximum discomfort. This can help you settle on a modified diet plan that reduces belching.
  • Check the Intake of Air Through your Mouth: Swallowing too much air is another cause for belching.

There are many ways that this can happen. Smoking, chewing gum, anxiety, eating too fast and gulping food down are some situations in which you tend to swallow too much air. Very little of the ingested air is expelled through the bowels. The remaining air needs to be belched in order to bring comfort.
  • Popping fennel seeds, a piece of dry ginger or a ginger sweet after a meal can help decrease gas formation in your stomach and eliminate belching problems. Belching abdominal pain is another common problem that can be treated with this simple remedy.
  • Drinking cold milk on an empty stomach is also an effective gas reliever. This is useful especially when the reason for gas build up is due to excessive or strong medication. On the flip side, belching can also be caused due to lactose intolerance (indigestion or heaviness after drinking milk or milk products). It is wise to make a note of the kind of reaction in your body after the intake of milk and take action accordingly.
  • Do not lie down soon after eating. Either go for a short walk or sit with your feet tucked under you, almost in a kneeling position for about ten minutes to help the food to digest well.•    Chew food well and eat slowly. This will prevent you from gulping down too much air.
  • Try simple exercises that force out the excess air from your stomach. Lie flat on your back and press your knees close to your chest. Repeat this exercise about ten times. It will make you feel better and allow the air to escape.
  • Sitting up straight after meals forces the air up and can be easily belched. A lying down posture traps the air inside, causing more discomfort.
  • Ill-fitting dental fixtures such as dentures or braces can cause an individual to take in too much air. Correct these conditions at the earliest to experience relief.
