Applying olive oil to the chest is believed to help provide relief from an intense chest cough and is quite a popular remedy. Eucalyptus oil is also another excellent herb extract that has tremendous medicinal value and can be applied to the chest for relief. It is also of the utmost importance that the congestion which is responsible for the cough is addressed. Steam or vapour inhalations can help to this end. Steam inhalation is possibly the most effective of all chest cough remedies. You can add a few drops of eucalyptus, peppermint or olive oil to a bowl of steaming water and position your head over it so that the steam rises towards your face. Place a towel over your head, also enclosing the bowl. You can also have a hot shower, with the water heated enough to steam a mirror.

There are a number of other simple home remedies for coughing that you can try out at home. Boil some cloves of garlic in water after which you may take out the cloves and drink the water. Drinking herbal teas also helps a lot and soothes the throat providing instant relief. Some of the most popular herbs used with tea would include green tea, thyme, hyssop, salvia, fennel, peppermint and eucalyptus.

Another effective remedy that you can try out requires ginger root and wine. Cook some ground ginger root in sweet wine, after which you should strain it and have at least a few sips of the mixture everyday. This will help reduce the coughing. You can also try and have a mixture of honey and lemon grass juice. Mix the ingredients in equal proportions and drink it. Honey and brandy is also an age old chest cough remedy that is still very popular and is quite effective.
