Essential oils can be extracted from flowers, stems, leaves, and seeds of various herbs and plants. The essential oils have the specific aromas of the plants from which the oils are extracted. Essential oils are widely used in aromatherapy for the treatment of several ailments.
Most essential oils are volatile, and it is for this property that the aroma from the oils is released. Despite their name, most essential oils are non-oily.
There are several essential oils that have the excellent ability to boost the growth of hair.
Essential oils for hair growth have been used since centuries. These essential oils nourish and strengthen the roots of your hair and help them grow naturally at a faster rate. Nowadays, essential oils for hair growth are being used by most aroma therapists.
Some of the most commonly used essential oils for hair growth are mentioned below:
- Coconut oil for hair growth is one of the most popular oils, and it has been in use since the ancient times. Regular massage on your scalp not only prevents hair loss but also improves the growth of your hair.
- Another one of the more popular essential oils for hair growth is jojoba essential oil. It is especially beneficial for preventing hair loss. Jojoba oil has properties that help in repairing damaged hair.
- The use of olive oil for hair growth is also considerably popular. Olive oil is very rich in Vitamin E, which is very necessary for nourishing the hair follicle and shaft. If you experience hair fall or slow growth, massage your scalp gently with olive oil using your fingertips, before going to bed, and wash the hair using a mild shampoo in the morning. Doing this two to three times a week would increase hair growth and rejuvenate the scalp.
- Rosemary essential oil is also very popularly used by many aroma therapists for the treatment of hair loss as well as hair growth. It is known to be perhaps the best of all essential oils for hair loss.
Some other essential oils for hair growth are grapefruit seeds oil, tea tree oil, peppermint oil, bay essential oil, chamomile essential oil, lavender essential oil, and basil essential oil.
You must note that most essential oils are very strong and should be used only after diluting it with a carrier oil. Before using them you must also consult your health care provider and a professional aroma therapist as some oils could cause irritation and allergic reactions in the body.
Here's one of my favorite remedies below that if you have an itchy scalp with give you some soothing relief as well as help to restore balance to your scalp again and help your hair regrow.
Lavender oil has been shown to increase hair growth in clinical trials where 70 % of people who massaged it into their scalps 3 times a week had a significant increase in hair regrowth where the control group in the same test using almond had no increase. You can massage this remedy into your scalp or spray is on your scalp with a spray bottle. Leave it on for about 15 minutes then you can either shampoo it out or leave it on your scalp.
Mix these oils in one cup of warm purified distilled water (if you have it otherwise tap water):
Half a teaspoon of Margosa oil (very powerful anti itching oil)
Half a teaspoon of Teatree or Melaleuca oil (for a sensational tingle and bacteria blaster)
15 drops of Rosemary Essential Oil (heals & soothes plus has mild antiseptic properties)
15 Drops of Lavender Essential Oil (soothing, mildly antibiotic and very calming plus it helps your hair grow back thicker and stronger).
Shake vigorously as the oils will try to separate from the water so apply quickly. If you want to mix the oils together without the water but instead use ¼ cup of olive, or almond oil you can then use this to apply directly to irritated areas. As with all remedies it is your responsibility to take adequate precautions. As with any treatment and this information is given, please do a patch test first to ensure for sensitivity and allergies to these oils (although reactions are rare).
Note: If you are pregnant, oils such as Rosemary should not be used – please consult a practitioner for advice on safe alternatives to oils that are contraindicated when pregnant)
