Causes of Gonorrhea

As in the case of most sexually transmitted infections, they are spread by indiscriminate sex with strangers for sexual partners. The causes of gonorrhea are primarily bacteria called Neisseria gonorrhoeae that cause the infection.

These bacteria grow in warm, moist orifices of the body. Therefore areas that get affected include the mouth, the anus, the vagina, the penis and even the reproductive tract including the cervix, fallopian tubes and the uterus. This infection can also occur in the eyes.

The risk factors of gonorrhea are so many that it is the law in the Unites States of America that a diagnosed patient must be reported to proper authorities. Some common means or risks of getting the infection are:

  • Having unprotected sexual intercourse with an infected partner or a stranger without a condom
  • In rare cases, a mother can infect the unborn child with this infection
