Living with Cervical Cancer

The outcome and prognosis of cervical cancer treatment will depend on the stage of the disease, the age of the patient and her overall physical condition. Precancerous conditions if detected in time are totally curable. However, if the cancer has spread outside the walls of the cervix and to other parts of the body, the treatment gets complicated and the survival rate drops significantly. There are even some types of cervical cancers that do not respond well to any form of treatment.

Living with cervical cancer can be difficult for the patient and her family and loved ones. Side effects of cancer treatments can be severe and lead to several other health problems and complications such as sexual problems and bowel or bladder functions. Even if the treatment is successful, there is always the fear and the chance that the cancer will recur. The ramifications of cervical cancer can therefore be life changing. The woman can be overwhelmed with all the physical and emotional changes taking place and in such cases it is recommended that she turn to her friends and loved ones for all the support and understanding that she needs. Counselors, health care providers and other cancer survivors can provide additional support. Joining a support group is highly beneficial to cancer patients and survivors.
