Like the name suggests, sex headaches refer to those headaches that have been triggered of by any form of sexual activity, in most cases, an orgasm. When a person is about to suffer from a sex headache he or she may first notice a dull pain in the head and the neck area. As the excitement increases, the pain is also bound to get worse. However, in some people sex headaches occur suddenly, either just before an orgasm, or during one. One of the common causes of sex headaches in women could be the use of birth control pills or other medication.

Symptoms

Not all instances of headaches just before or during intercourse is caused by a sex headache. At times, it is also possible to experience a sex headache after intercourse. Most of these headaches last for a time frame of around 30 minutes or so, but there have been instances, where a sex headache lingers for hours. Therefore, it is important to know how to recognize a sex headache, so that it can be dealt with accordingly. Given below are some of the common symptoms of a sex headache:

  • The headache gets more intense, with the increase in sexual excitement
  • It occurs on both the sides of the head and builds as a gradual pain
  • It builds gradually and probably gets worse just a few minutes before an organism
  • It causes the muscles in the jaw and the neck to tighten

Treatment

There are many men and women who have experienced a sex headache only once in their life. Moreover, the pain caused by a sex headache is usually so brief that it disappears even before any medication can react. However, there are some people who suffer from chronic sex headaches. It is absolutely essential for such instances to be investigated by a doctor. In case there is no deeper underlying cause of the frequent sex headaches, then the medical health care expert may just recommend the use of painkillers, home remedies or even herbal headache cures.

However, frequent use of painkillers should be strictly avoided, or else it could lead to dependency. Moreover, many of the herbal headache cures have not been approved by any major health care organization and could lead to adverse side effects.
