Pain in the anus can be very disturbing and embarrassing. Anal pain is not often experienced and can hence cause a lot of concern and worry. The type of pain described by your son seems that he could be suffering from anal fissures. This pain is often described by people as being piercing and sharp. It is mainly experienced during bowel motion. In some cases, the pain may continue for even 10 to 15 minutes after the bowel movement. Additionally, it is possible to experience some blood in the bowel or on the toilet paper. While such symptoms of pain in the anus could commonly be a result of an anal fissure, a herpes virus or hemorrhoids could also be the cause of this.

The tearing of the anal skin is known as an anal fissure. It would typically occur at the back, just inside the anus. They are most commonly found amongst young adults and teenagers. Your son may feel a tiny lump alongside the fissure. This is known as a skin tag. An anal fissure would usually follow constipation. As constipation causes stress to the anal area, there are chances that, during the straining, some skin gets torn. You need not worry too much about the anal fissure as it is not dangerous. It is rather painful, though. An anal fissure does heal by itself, but it may take many weeks to heal fissures and there are chances that the scar can tear again. You need to decrease the pain by avoiding constipation. Have lots of liquids and foodstuffs rich in fiber like fresh fruits and vegetables and whole bran cereals. This will keep the feces soft and help pass the bowel movements less painfully. You may also apply some gel around the painful spot. Do this before your bowel movement. Painkilling application gels are available easily in the market. Taking a warm bath will help reduce the discomfort.

The pain in the anus could also be a result of the Herpes virus infection. Such an infection can occur in people who have never had Herpes before. It can also spread by the hands from infections elsewhere. It is best to visit the doctor if you suspect a Herpes virus infection.

Hemorrhoids are also known as piles and can cause severe pain in the anus. Nearly 75% of the people in the United States suffer from piles at some point or the other during their lives, though the most common age group is from 45 to 65 years. Hemorrhoids could cause a sense of fullness in the bowels, which causes a feeling of urgency for a bowel movement. This feeling can cause people to strain for bowel movement, which only worsens the situation. The pain can be intense and cause irritation in the anus. Here are some natural remedies for hemorrhoids that would help provide piles relief:

  • Increase your fiber consumption. This is known to provide relief from piles. It will increase the bulk of your bowel movement and also soften up the stool.
  • Increase your water consumption. This is one of the best hemorrhoids home treatment that will help pass the bowel movement easily.
  • Apply Witch Hazel Cream. The cream is available at pharmacies and is an efficient home treatment for hemorrhoids. Apply it around the anal area regularly. It will reduce the bleeding. It is also used to decrease swelling, itching and pain caused by hemorrhoids.
  • Increase your consumption of citrus fruits. Citrus fruits, such as limes and oranges, contain plant compounds known as bioflavonoids. As they strengthen the walls of the blood vessels, they reduce the inflammation. They have been found to decrease the bleeding and the pain caused by hemorrhoids.
