How to clear red eyes using home remedies?

Red eyes are usually referred to as bloodshot eyes. Red eyes syndrome is a condition that develops when the tiny blood vessels known as sclera, present on the surface of the eye get enlarged and clogged with blood. When there is a decrease in the supply of oxygen to the cornea of the eye or to the tissues enclosing the eyes, it leads to the condition known as red eyes. Under normal circumstances, the occurrence of red eyes is not a grave condition; however, if it is associated with pain in the eye as well impaired vision it may be indicative of an underling serious problem.

Red eyes are most commonly caused due to fatigue, strained eyes and mechanical irritation. Other factors which are responsible for red eyes include natural elements such as excessively dry air and sun exposure. Infection, allergies, trauma, unhealthy diets and excessive consumption of alcohol are also known to be causes. Studies have shown that deficiencies in Vitamin B2, B6 and amino acids such as lysine also cause red eyes. Eye inflammation and eye infections also contribute to red eye conditions leading to itching, pain and problem with vision.

You can consider the following natural treatment to tackle this condition.

  • Some nonprescription eye drops maybe beneficial for the eyes. Normally available over the counter eye drops are designed to reduce the redness by shrinking the blood vessel in the eyes. Studies have shown that these medications may prove to be harmful to the eyes in the long run. Natural eye drops are developed to treat the condition of dry eyes by emulating your natural tears.
  • Another simple yet effective way of cooling down tired eyes and reducing the inflammation is to make use of a cold compress over the closed eyes. Prepare a cool compress and use it to soothe your tired dry eyes, especially if they have been caused due to stress and strain on them. Take a clean cloth and soak it in cold water. Squeeze the cloth and place it over your eyes for a few minutes. The compress will be helpful in restricting the blood vessels whilst the action of closing your eyes will help them regain their moisture.
