Are there any first aid measures to be followed while treating insect bites?

Insect bites can cause mild or severe reactions in most people and knowing how to give first aid for insect bites is crucial in treating the bite or sting. While providing first aid for insect bites that have caused mild reactions it is very important to first move the person to a safer area and remove the stinger if it is stuck in the skin. This should be followed by applying a cold pack to reduce the inflammation and pain and then calamine lotion or hydrocortisone cream can be applied through the day till the symptoms start subsiding. Incase of severe reactions like nausea, vomiting, dizziness, breathlessness or palpitations, emergency services must be notified immediately. While providing first aid for insect bites that are severe the person should immediately be given anti-allergic medications followed by some antihistamines. The person should be made to lie down with the legs more elevated than the head and preferably sideways so that choking can be prevented. The best cure for insect bites is to immediately apply some aloe vera, tea tree oil or even regular toothpaste which will help in reducing the inflammation and itching. Herbs like Echinacea, jewelweed and lavender essential oil are also good cures for insect bites.
