I do have pile. I am a Nigerian and most of the home remedies you have here are not available here in west Africa, I would like to know what local remedy I can use here that can rid me of this problem. Thank you for your time.



Piles also referred to as hemorrhoids, is a condition that affects millions of people. This condition is brought about due to a swelling and inflammation of the veins that are present in and around the lower rectum and anus. Piles develops due to pressure being exerted on these veins, particularly during strained bowel movements. Piles can be of two types; first being internal piles, when the veins inside the rectum get inflamed. This form of piles is generally not painful and the swollen veins can very rarely be seen or felt. The second is external piles, as the name suggests, this is characterized by an inflammation of the veins present around the anus. This condition however can tend to be painful. Many a times the swollen veins may also be felt or seen. Hemorrhoids can be caused due to several reasons, such as; pregnancy, obesity, constipation, tension, strenuous work and standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time.

Here are a few home remedies that can help in curing this condition. Clean 4-5 figs thoroughly and soak them in a glass of water overnight. The following morning, consume both the figs as well as the water that they were soaked in, on an empty stomach. This treatment should be remedy once again in the evening. This remedy should be performed for 2-3 months to gain relief from piles. White radish is also considered to be an effective treatment for this condition. Mix together a teaspoon of honey and 100 grams of grated white radish. This mixture should be consumed twice a day. Radish juice is also beneficial for treating piles. Extract the juice from the vegetable and consume 60 ml of the juice in the morning and 90 ml at night.

Blend a few turnip leaves in order to extract their juice. A glass of this juice can be had on a daily basis. However it is important that you maintain a proper diet that comprises of green vegetables and fresh fruits when taking this juice. Mix together, one tablespoon of honey, a teaspoon each of freshly squeezed lime juice and mint juice with half a teaspoon of ginger juice. This should be had on a daily basis to gain relief from this condition. It is important that you drink plenty of water, a minimum of 8-10 glasses of water daily is recommended. A diet that is both healthy and well balanced is essential. Fiber rich foods are beneficial for this condition.

Try the following home remedies along with some dietary modifications to ease your condition -

  • Dried figs are widely available. Soak 2-3 dried figs in a cup of water at night and eat this with the water next day morning on an empty stomach. The soluble fiber in figs would help facilitate the bowel movements by improving the peristaltic movements there by making the stool consistency softer.
  • Mash a ripe banana and boil it with a cup of milk. Drink this 3 times a day; this is a very effective home remedy for piles.
  • Drink loads of water, buttermilk. Avoid refined foods, oily/fried foods, spicy junk foods, canned foods, non-vegetarian foods, tea, coffee or any caffeinated beverages, smoking, alcohol, sugar and sweets and sedentary lifestyle.
  • Increase the use of ginger, garlic, onions, radish, beetroot, bitter gourd and other fresh fruits and dark green leafy vegetables liberally in your meals.
