What can you use to prevent lice when there is an outbreak in school?

Head lice are a common problem in school going children. They aren't that easy to spot and they multiply very rapidly. Here are some measures to try and prevent your child from catching lice at school but they may not be 100% effective.

  • Tie up long hair or plait it when your kid goes to school
  • Put a couple of drops of either tea tree oil or lavender oil on a brush and brush your child's hair with it. Do the same before bed time
  • Use a tea tree based shampoo or conditioner to wash his/her hair every couple of days, especially if the hair is long.

In case his/her head is already infested with lice, you need not use medicated shampoos as most of them have ingredients that are not good for children. Try the following remedies instead:

  • Wash the hair with a solution containing vinegar. This kills lice. After this using a fine toothed nit comb, clean out nits and then rinse finally with a conditioner containing tea tree oil.
  • In place of vinegar solution you can also apply an oil that you make up in the following manner. Add ten drops of tea tree oil and lavender oil to half a cup of olive oil and apply it to his/ her hair making sure to touch the scalp as well. Wash it off with shampoo and celan out with a nit comb as before.
