Lung Pain

by Sharon Hopkins

Technically, lungs do not feel pain as they do not have any pain receptors. Lung pain is essentially pain in the region of the lungs. This kind of pain can be caused due to various reasons.

Causes

Some of the reasons for lung pain include inflammation in the lungs and surrounding areas due to an infection or any other condition. Irritation or inflammation in the pleural lining in the lungs can also cause lung pain; this occurs as a result of the friction between the pleural layers, on inhalation, triggering severe pain. Other causes could be pressure in the chest cavity due to benign or cancerous tumors or inflammation in a nerve. Coughing, injuries, and shingles pain can also cause chest wall pain. Bronchitis, asthma, pneumonia, hyperventilation, shallow and rapid breathing, shortness of breath, and even unexplained weight loss are some of the symptoms of problems associated with the lungs.

When Breathing

Lung pain when breathing may be due to upper respiratory tract infections or a symptom of a more serious problem. Sometimes, however, mild lung pain can also be triggered by simple activities such as exercising or jogging; this happens when the heart rate and breathing rate have increased and there is not enough oxygen in the body. In winter, after a run, walk, or jog, one can experience lung pain due to lack of moisture in the air due to which the air passage is narrowed, causing pain. In such cases, it is better to go jogging or running in the afternoons when the day is warmest or you can exercise indoors on a treadmill to keep away from the draft. Lung pain can be nothing to worry about or it could be an indication of something serious; thus, if you feel sudden changes in breathing or a sudden pain in the lungs, it is important to consult your physician. Treatments are based on and advised depending on the cause.

Burning Pain in the Lungs

Burning pain in the lungs is a symptom and not a disease in itself; nevertheless, it needs to be taken seriously as it can be an important indicator of any underlying disease. The diseases that cause burning pain in the lungs are pleurisy, which is the inflammation of the membrane around the lungs; pneumonia, which is a respiratory disease that causes lung inflammation; and pleural effusion, which is the accumulation of excess fluid in the pleural membrane. Burning lung pain can also be due to an allergic reaction to pollution or as part of an asthma attack. In some cases, burning lung pain can be early indication of lung cancer. It is best to check with your doctor if you experience any kind of pain in the chest area.
