Prevention of Food Allergy in Infants

Allergies are a common phenomenon not just among adults but also children. Children especially infants are at a greater risk of contacting allergies. Allergy can be contacted at the time of introduction of solid or sometimes external foods like cow’s milk, etc.

It has been advised by pediatricians all over the world that for first six months of infant’s life infant must be fed only with breast milk, from six months to a year, the infant should be introduced with external foods. It has been found that introduction of solid food before 4 months of age puts an infant at the risk of contacting atopic dermatitis, which can occur till ten years of age.

Formula milk meant for babies can cause allergies too. It has also been found that children who were fed with cows milk formula later develop allergies for cow’s milk. It has also been found that babies that were fed exclusively with breast milk will six months of age were at a lower risk of asthma in later life. With later introduction of solids in infants daily diet has been found to be beneficial for prevention of allergies.

Though, more facts about prevention of diseases need to be confirmed. It is not yet known whether delayed introduction of solids delays diseases or it prevents occurrence of disease all together.

Main problem regarding allergic reaction to food is for fresh foods and vegetables. Food allergies in children are triggered more because of these because there are more allergens present in fresh foods and vegetables. You can avoid allergies by introducing well cooked home food instead of introducing fresh fruits and vegetables at initial stages.

You can avoid occurrence of allergies by introducing allergy causing foods at later stage. Milk and milk products can be introduced at the age of 12 months, eggs to be introduced at 24 months and fish to be introduced at 36 months of age.

There are certain things you should consider before introduction of solid foods, firstly is the nutritional value of food, whether the food is hygienic or not and most importantly consider whether there are any chances that the food might be allergic at all.

Introducing right foods at right age, will help avoiding several allergies, it might also help avoiding or delaying any diseases or health problems that might result from allergies. Checking out food for its allergy potential is a must before giving it to the infant. The best food initially would be home made simple recipe like well cooked soft plain rice.
