Treatment for Thalassemia


  • Regular blood transfusion is one of the ongoing treatments to relieve the symptoms of thalassemia. However, this may lead to increased iron level in the body. As such, the patients may be subjected to chelation therapy to lower the iron content of the body.
  • Bone marrow transplantation may be a permanent cure in children.
  • Doctors may prescribe certain vaccinations like those for Hepatitis B, meningitis and pneumococcal infections. This is because thalassemia may sometimes affect the spleen, disrupting its functionality. If the spleen has been removed in the patient, these vaccines help prevent against a variety of afflictions.
