Prevention from Thalassemia

The affliction cannot be prevented in an individual; it can only be treated to lessen the signs and symptoms of it.  However, it may be diagnosed by prenatal tests and such parents can sign up for genetic counseling to avert the affliction.

The couples should check if they have recessive traits of thalassemia before marriage and conception, so that they may chose alternate partners who do not have thalassemia.

If a child is born with thalassemia, it has to undergo constant blood transfusion and chelation therapy, along with other treatments like vaccination, etc. depending upon the severity and stage of the affliction.
