Using toothpaste on a burn works only as a temporary solution to stopping the pain of a burn. The best things to do is use ice to cool the area first. You always want to be sure that the skin is cool to the touch. Your internal body temperature can fluctuate if the skin or nerves in that general area affected severly. Consult a doctor if the person seems faint and can't move. This can result in shock to the system. Have the individual lie down with head extended at a 45 degree angle. This will stop the person from passing out rapidly. If the burn is caused by grease or a substance like battery acid, remove the clothing that is saturated first then wash the grease off with mild soap and water, always be sure the water is cold to reduce the heat level in the body too. Once you put that fire out, you are halfway to healing. The next step is to determine what kind of burn you sustained. first degree like sunburned skin are red and painful. Second degree burns, including severe sunburned skin, cause blisters that are painful and can ooze out puss. third degree burns are the most severe and require a doctors assistance, the skin will look charred(black) with a white creamy color around the edges. these can be caused by chemicals, electricity, or prolonged contact with a hot surface. These cause nerve damage. to be sure you require a doctor's assistance, look for such burns as those on the face, hands, feet, pelvic, and pubic areas or in the eyes. Any burn you arent sure of is usually a first or second degree burn. Any burn that shows signs of infection, including the blisters can fill quickly with greenish or brownish substance and can return hot at a moments notice. Any burn that doesnt heal in 10 days or 2 weeks needs immediate medical attention. If requiring emergency medical attention wash the area but DO NOT USE OINTMENTS as this can only make the area more severe until the medical staff can be sure this would have helped. Think on this, if a fire started, you would not want to smother butter on it, it only makes it burn further, right? Burns hold in tempuratures deep below the survace of the skin tissue and will often make the burn worsen. Do not use oldtime remedies here either, they too can make the symptoms far worse if not treated correctly. To be sure what kind of burn you have for a first degree/second the burn usually will measure smaller than a quarter on a child or smaller than a silver dollar on an adult. See a doctor for larger burns of for burns on infants under 1 year or people over 60. Gently wrap the burn in a clean dry soft cloth such as a thick gauze.

I'm a Line Cook and I get burned alot when working with boiling water. The best way to get rid a burn from hot water is to apply real butter to the burned area. It will melt and get messy but it works great. The heat goes away and there is no blisters or red marks.

Pastry Chef: My first day on the job, a co-worker dropped a bottle in to an extremly hot pot hot cooking oil, which caused it to splash and cover my hand and arm. I then immersed the affected area in to egg whites for a while and let dry. But the ending result, there was no pain, blisters or scars. For minor burns, just crack an egg and rub the egg white on it.
