Symptoms of Personality Disorder



It is not unusual for people diagnosed with one type of personality disorder to exhibit signs and symptoms of other personality disorders as well. This makes it difficult to classify disorders, although there are certain common symptoms across all types. These include:

  • Troubled relationships
  • Social isolation
  • Difficulty making friends and interacting socially
  • Frequent bursts of anger
  • Feelings of suspicion and mistrust
  • Lack of control of impulses
  • Need for instant gratifications
  • Substance abuse
  • Alcohol abuse
There are also signs and symptoms specific to a particular type of personality disorder:

1. Paranoid Personality Disorder:

  • Extreme and frequent mood swings
  • Troubled relationships
  • Social isolation
  • Difficulty making friends and interacting socially

2. Schizoid Personality Disorder:

  • No interest in social relationships
  • Inability to express a wide range of emotions
  • Lack of sensitivity to normal social cues
  • Indifference to others
  • May appear dull to other people

3. Schizotypal Personality Disorder:

  • Very specific and peculiar ways of thinking and behaving
  • Discomfort in close relationships
  • Inappropriate emotional responses
  • Feelings of indifference
  • Belief that you can influence people with your thoughts and change events according to your wishes

4. Antisocial Personality Disorder:

  • Lack of regard for others
  • Lying
  • Stealing
  • Getting into trouble with the law
  • Aggressive behavior
  • Repeated disregard of safety and rights of others

5. Borderline Personality Disorder:

  • Partakes in risky behavior
  • Relationships tend to be volatile
  • Prone to suicidal thoughts and behavior
  • Unstable mood swings
  • Fear of being alone

6. Histrionic Personality Disorder:

  • Constant need for attention
  • Excessively emotional behavior
  • Need for approval from others
  • Unstable moods

7. Narcissistic Personality Disorder:

  • Believing that you are better than others
  • Constantly exaggerating your skills and achievements
  • Always expecting praise
  • Not taking into consideration the feelings of others

8. Avoidant Personality Disorder:

  • Hypersensitivity
  • Feelings of inadequacy
  • Social isolation
  • Timidity and shyness

9. Dependent Personality Disorder:


  • Need to be taken care of by others
  • Tolerance of abuse and negative relationships
  • Submissiveness
  • Dependence
  • Constant need to be in a relationship

10. Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder:

  • Obsessed about rules and order
  • Perfectionism
  • Need to always be in control
  • Not able to discard old and worthless things
  • Not flexible
It is essential to see a doctor or mental health care provider if you or anyone you know has any of the signs and symptoms of a personality disorder, it. If left untreated, personality disorders can have serious effects on both the individual as well as those around him.
