Causes of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

The causes of Obsessive-compulsive disorder are not clearly known. There is speculation that chemical imbalances in the brain and the body and a family history of the condition could cause obsessive compulsive disorder. These factors can contribute to the development of this condition. People, who have a history of OCD in their family, are usually more prone to developing it. However, there are many people who suffer from this condition and yet have no one in their family who has suffered from it. Research has also shown that a specific variation of a gene may be responsible for the development of this anxiety disorder. The imbalance of serotonin, a mood enhancing chemical in the brain is also often associated with the condition. Some people may develop OCD without any reason. Often, it is caused due to some specific stressful events such as being a victim of sexual abuse.
