Prognosis of Mesothelioma

All types of cancers are unpredictable by nature and mesothelioma even more so. This makes it difficult for doctors to predict the efficacy of the treatment and a possible prognosis for mesothelioma. Results can vary significantly from person to person though on the whole, the survival rate for mesothelioma is poor. This is due to the fact that the disease is an exceptionally aggressive form of cancer. Additionally, the long latency period of the disease makes it difficult to catch the cancer in the early stages where remission is more possible.

The prognosis of mesothelioma generally depends on:

  • The type of the cancer
  • Area of the body affected
  • Stage of the disease when treatment has begun
  • Metastasis – whether the cancer has spread to other parts of the body or has remained localized
  • Overall health of the patient
