Hernia Surgery |
Hernia SurgeryHernia surgery is a type of medical procedure that is used to correct the pain and discomfort of a hernia.
A hernia is defined as a bulging of the internal tissues or organs in an individual’s body. A hernia will protrude through the opening of the abdomen in the lining of the muscle wall. Hernia surgery is the most common of all surgical procedures performed in the United States. There are over seven hundred thousand hernia operations performed each year.
The most common types of hernias are femoral or inguinal hernia, incisional hernia and umbilical hernia.
Inguinal hernia surgery is performed on an individual’s groin area. Inguinal hernia surgery is also referred to as femoral hernia surgery. This type of hernia will cause an individual to have pain in the groin area.
Hiatal hernia surgery is usually performed on an individual who is experiencing a lot of back pain. A hiatal hernia surgery may be needed if the individual acquired the hernia from heavy lifting.
A person who is afflicted by a hernia may experience pain and discomfort that causes this individual to consider having hernia surgery performed. If a hernia can not be pushed back into place and the pain is quite severe then an emergency surgery may be performed. Usually though, hernia surgery is the choice of the individual.
Hernia surgery is a surgical procedure that is done in a same day surgery setting. A same day surgery setting means that the individual has the surgery and hoes home in the same day. There are two different types of hernia surgeries that are performed.
The first type of surgery is a traditional repair.
During a traditional repair the surgery is actually performed outside the body. A cut is made through the skin over top of the hernia. Once the cut is made the hernia is removed and the torn muscle is repaired. This type of surgery requires that an individual receive stitches.
Local anesthesia is used for a traditional repair surgery.
A laparoscopic repair surgery is a type of operation that is performed with a tiny telescope. A cut is made in the skin so the tiny telescope can be inserted. The doctor can then repair the hernia from the abdominal wall. This surgery leaves a small scar then having a traditional procedure performed. With hernia surgery there is a short period of recovery time.
Usually after having hernia surgery performed an individual will feel a tiny bit of discomfort and soreness in the area in which the incision was made. This is a normal part of the healing process.
