Kidney Cancer

by Rachel Bhan

Kidney cancer is a as serious as any other type of cancer. The most common type of kidney cancer is the renal cell carcinoma; this type of carcinoma originates from the renal tubule.

Just like any other type of cancer, kidney cancer too has it own symptoms. The first symptom is hematuria, or blood in urine, where the color or urine changes from the normal to brownish or with a red tinge. Another symptom of kidney cancer is constipation, where the patient might not be able to clear the bowel regularly. The patient also starts losing weight, or else the patient might start looking highly malnourished. Some other symptoms are pain, excessive hair growth, in case of men, enlargement of one testicle and higher levels of calcium. People also develop an unhealthy pallor on their skin.

The causes of kidney cancer have not yet been established like the other type of cancers, but smokers are at a higher risk of developing renal cell carcinoma. Patients undergoing other kidney treatments like dialysis are also at a risk of developing renal cell carcinoma.

There are several types of treatments available for treatment of kidney cancer. People with beginning of the cancer can undergo treatments other than surgery, some treatments are like percutaneous therapies, which d not involve surgery instead involve only probing into the tumor and destroying it with radiofrequency ablation (providing heat to the tumor for destroying it).

Therapies like radiation therapies might not be used for this type of cancer, since these do not have much effect on the cancer. There are quite some numbers of medications used for this cancer, these have shown effective increased resistance for the disease. The latest development for curing kidney cancer is the vaccine that has already being developed for cancer patients.

Longevity of life in patients with kidney cancer is good. In case the cancer is in its beginning stages and has not spread throughout the kidneys, then the person can live longer than 5 years after removal of this cancer. If the cancer has spread in some parts of kidney, then too the patient can hope to live for up till 5 years after successful surgery and destruction of the cancer, however the life longevity reduces drastically for those who have been highly infected with kidney cancer can expect to live up to 2-3 years. It all depends on general health of the patient and the way the responds to the treatment.
