Wax Blockage

Wax blockage or ear impaction is the impediment of the ear canal with cerumen or wax.  Because of the blocked ear canal, it can be become a cause for hearing loss.

And perhaps the most common cause of deafness.  The ear canal has the hair follicles as well as the glands.  The wax or cerumen produced by the glands functions as protection against foreign particles that may find its way into the ears.  The wax gradually moves to the opening of the ear either falls out or is removed when taking a bath.  But in some people, their ears tend to produce more wax, and this extra may become firm within the ear canal and causes the blockage.  Aggravated when cleaning which pushes the wax deeper into the ear canal.

With the blockage partial hearing loss might be consequential.  Ringing sound or noises in the air will result as well as earache.  With physical assessment, it can show how much wax is accumulated inside the ear canal.  Treatment can vary.  Ordinarily home treatment like mineral oil, baby oil, glycerin and others can be used in most cases.  But infections and tearing of the eardrum from excessive cleaning can cause deafness.  Ear infections are the most common cause of hearing loss especially in children which can be temporary as well.  Fluids which hang on in the ear after an infection can cause considerable hearing difficulties and a cause for concern.  For some people hearing impairment may result from a gradual increase of earwax.  The blockage of the ear canal prevents sound transference.  Sometimes wax blockage can cause only temporary hearing loss if attended to immediately.  The doctor can assist in the treatment of blockage if you have repetitive wax obstruction and had a ruptured eardrum in the past.

When hearing loss has set in, the use of hearing aids can help, a cochlear implant can be an option.

Different hearing aid types are available which may not be of help to everyone with hearing impairment but can only improve hearing for many people.

Help is available for people with hearing problems unless the damaged in the eardrum is irreversible.  Medical treatments, an assortment of augmentation systems and uncomplicated handling skills can improve hearing.  Hearing loss at a certain level can be treated by seeing a doctor and audiologist.   With improved hearing you can have a quality of life.  Like what has been said before, an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.
