Cut and tears on men's penis is quite common. The most common cause for these cuts is sexual intercourse. Following is a list of some of the most common situations which can lead to a tear during sexual activity.

  • Traction caused by friction, rubbing or brushing against the vagina is of course the most obvious cause. The risk of a tear is more if the penis is large and penetrates deeper into the vagina.
  • Frenulum distress may be another cause. The middle of the penis has a bit of delicate skin on the bottom side called the frenulum. The frenulum is not meant to tear and normally remains in place even after sexual intercourse. However, some men have a short / tight frenulum which easily gets dragged back and forth during sex and is susceptible to getting ripped, especially if sex is too intense.
  • A condition called balanitis is another possible cause. It is caused mostly due to low hygiene and infection and sometimes due to chronic diabetes. It is characterized by inflammation, infection, redness and/or rashes on the penile head. Healing is further slowed down in diabetics. Men who haven’t been circumcised are more prone to develop balanitis.
  • A reddened penile head may also be the result of yeast infection. Penis tears, rashes and swellings may also be caused due to yeast infection.
  • Genital piercings and allergy to latex condoms may also cause damage to the penis.

Treatment: Treatment for penile injury depends upon the cause.

  • Use lubricants to reduce friction and avoid injury. Or enter the vagina when partner is aroused and wet.
  • A quick and minor surgery called frenuloplasty can be performed to avoid frenulum damage. This surgery, done on men with short / thin frenulum can be done in an outpatient setting just before the onset of early adulthood. Healing procedure takes about a month.
  • Balanitis arising from skin diseases is treated with steroids, while balanitis arising from infection is treated with antibiotics. Circumcision is recommended to prevent recurrence and diabetics need to control sugar levels in order to quicken healing.
  • Topical antifungal creams are used to cure cuts on penis due to yeast infection.

It’s important to seek professional help no matter how small the cut is, because treatment primarily depends on the cause. As a general precaution, men should wear condoms during sex till the cut heals.
