What do I use hot or cold pad to relieve gout?

There are two types of gout both caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in a particular joint. If you suffer from acute gout, one specific joint may be affected whereas people with chronic gout suffer from multiple joint pain. Attacks of gout can occur suddenly and can be extremely severe. The collection of uric acid crystals causes an inflammation of the joint and pain ensues.

Apart from medications there are different ways to relieve gout pain. One of the most effective cures for gout is a dietary change. Since protein and fat can aggravate gout, a diet high in red meats and animal organs should be completely avoided. Similarly, alcohol can have an adverse effect on the accumulation of uric acid in the joints and should be avoided as well. For severe cases, a fruit-only diet for the duration of the gout attack may be necessary. All refined and processed foods should be struck out from your daily diet completely. This includes beverages such as coffee and tea.

You ask specifically about the use of hot or cold compresses to treat gout. Experts suggest that cold compresses are better for treating inflammations and joint pain rather than warm ones. To provide some pain relief, you should first place a clean sheet or cloth over the affected joint before placing an ice pack on it. This will help protect the skin and prevent a sudden decrease in temperature. Keep in mind though that too many cold compresses can do more damage than good as excessive exposure to cold can cause further crystallization of uric acid in the joints. Ice packs and cold compresses are therefore short-term solutions to your problem. You will need to make radical changes to your lifestyle and diet for the most effective treatment for gout pain.

Some popular home remedies for gout include:

  • Drinking water mixed with the juice of half a lemon can help neutralize the uric acid in the blood and prevent the development of gout
  • Fruits such as bananas, apples and cherries should be consumed first thing in the morning to counter the swelling and pain caused by gout.
  • For joint pain and tenderness, try a blend of cherry juice and a few cloves of minced garlic.
  • Immerse joints affected with gout in a warm sitz bath mixed with Epsom salt for pain relief.
  • Apply castor oil to the inflamed joint to reduce swelling and discomfort.
  • Herbal remedies such as Capsicum. Devil’s Claw and Licorice may help reduce gout pain and lessen the intensity of recurring attacks.
