Could coconut oil be used for treating psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease which is not contagious. It is one of the oldest known skin illnesses. In ancient times people would confuse psoriasis with leprosy. A person who suffers from psoriasis has scaly red patches on the skin. This happens because the immune system sends out wrong signals which speed up the growth cycle of the skin cells. You will notice inflammation and excessive skin growth in those places. Your skin tends to get accumulated in these places and looks like silvery white patches and then plaque patches appear on different parts of the body such as the elbows and knees. There is however, no limit to how much this spreads. In some cases people are found with psoriasis on the entire body. It can affect the genitals, palms and soles of your feet as well. There are no specific cause for psoriasis but some factors that are responsible for aggravating psoriasis are drinking excessive alcohol, stress and smoking,

Treating Psoriasis is also very tricky. People use moisturizers, bath solutions and petroleum jelly as they reduce the dryness caused. Medicated ointments are prescribed that needs to be applied directly on the affected area. They help reduce inflammation, remove built-up scale, reduce skin turn over, and clear affected skin of plaques. For centuries coconut oil has proved to be very beneficial in treating psoriasis. coconut oil is a topical ointment that is rich in natural vitamins and comes with no side effects. It has anti inflammatory properties and hence it is a good home treatment for psoriasis. Coconut oil may not cure but will definitely reduce the inflammation and help treat the condition. Coconut oil consists of medium-chain fatty acids, which penetrate the skin and connecting tissues hence it can reduce the inflammation in the cells. The process of massaging coconut oil on your skin would help improve the blood circulation and remove all the extra and free radicals that enhance skin inflammation. Another advantage of massaging coconut oil on the skin is; the medium-fatty acids combine with the skins bacteria and turns into free fatty acids. These free fatty acids are responsible for reducing the inflammation.

In conclusion if coconut oil is applied to the skin everyday for some time then it will definitely help in reduce psoriasis. If you want better results then apply unprocessed virgin coconut oil directly on the affected area. This could however take several days before the anti-inflammatory effects of coconut oil on psoriasis are evident.
