How to Get Rid of Puffy Eyes

When you cry, the sodium in your tears will cause your eyes to swell up. Your eyes do not actually get swollen, but it is the skin around your eyes and eyelids that does. It takes time to flush out those extra tears after crying and reduce the swelling. The best defense against puffiness of your eyes is, unfortunately, prevention.

There are several home remedies for puffy eyes from crying. Here are a few of them:
  • Keep several chilled tea bags over your eyes for about 20 minutes. Make sure they are chilled, because they would get to the room temperature easily once you keep them over your eyes.
  • You could also keep chilled cucumber slices on your tired and puffy eyes. Cucumber feels good on your eyes. You may also use apple slices to reduce the swelling and puffy eyes. Just make sure that these slices are chilled as the low temperature would help you get rid of puffy eyes from crying very easily.
  • Splash some cold tap water on your eyes; this will help remove those extra tears left in your eyes.
  • You may even apply honey to your eyes. This is one of the oldest and tested methods to reduce the puffiness. It might burn initially when you apply, but the swelling reduces very quickly. Make sure that honey is of pure quality, any other cheap fake quality will damage your eyes.
  • Keeping ice packs over your eyes is also a good remedy to reduce puffiness of your eyes. You can dip cotton balls in chilled water and apply to your eyelids. This will provide relief and reduce swelling.
  • Alternatively, you could also use rose water instead of plain water. Rose water has natural healing properties which help reduce the swelling and give immediate relief.
  • A good night's sleep is the best way to cure swelling and puffiness. This is because sleep gives your body rest and helps restore the balance of fluids in your body. Remove your contact lenses before you go to sleep.
  • Drink some extra fluids, that will help flush out toxins and waste substances from your body.

The skin around your eyes is very thin and sensitive. No medication is required to reduce the puffiness. In fact, by the time any medication would kick in, your eyes would probably be back to normal. If symptoms of puffiness are severe you should notify a physician immediately.
