Excessive Phlegm in Throat

Excess phlegm
(25 Jun 2010)

In order to breathe properly, the lungs have to function well. Phlegm is produced in the lungs in order to protect them from infection by foreign particles. It is produced by the mucus membranes of the bronchial passages within the lungs.

Phlegm prevents foreign agents such as pollen and dust from entering the lungs and causing infection. It traps these particles and filters them out of the air passage. If foreign particles manage to enter the lungs, the body expels them along with the phlegm through coughing.

The most common type of phlegm that is coughed up is yellow-green phlegm. This is indicative of some underlying condition. Too much phlegm phlegm could also lead to shortness of breath and soreness of the throat. If the buildup of phlegm is excessive in the lungs, it would need proper medical attention. Many breathing problems may arise from this. To prevent further aggravation of the condition, it is essential to consult a doctor as soon as possible. Excess phlegm can result from many factors. Viral infections such as the common cold usually result in accumulation of phlegm in the lungs. Bronchitis is a respiratory illness that results from swelling of the mucus membranes of the lungs. This causes the windpipe to become narrow, thereby causing phlegm to build up in the air passage. The lung disease, asthma, can also lead to presence of lots of phlegm in the lungs. Other excess phlegm causes include sinusitis wherein the mucus membranes of the sinus cavities become inflamed. When phlegm is excessive in the sinuses, it may move down towards the lungs and interfere with breathing. Excess phlegm in the throat may be caused by excessive smoking. Continuous smoking leads to inflammation of the mucus linings of the throat and nose. Sometimes there may be excess phlegm after eating if the individual is allergic to certain foods such as dairy products and wheat-based foods.

To treat excess phlegm in the throat, one should gargle with a solution of salt and warm water. This helps to soothe throat irritation. People with excess phlegm problem must also drink plenty of fluids to keep the phlegm thin. To get rid of phlegm from the body, one can keep blowing the nose at regular intervals. An effective remedy for excess phlegm is a mixture of ginger and honey. Consume a tablespoon of this paste twice a day for relief from excess phlegm in the throat.
