Shortness of breath or breathlessness means difficulty in breathing. It is also called as dyspnea.

Shortness of breath may be experienced temporarily at high altitudes, extremes of weather conditions and during exhaustive exertive activity.

Other than these conditions, prolonged and persistent breathlessness signals an underlying medical problem. If it arises suddenly and is severe in intensity, it requires medical attention even if it may be for a short period of time.

Symptom of shortness of breath can be caused by a variety of abnormalities in different organ systems in the body primarily :

  • Regular exercise
  • Avoid being overweight. Always seek professional help before starting any weight loss or exercise program.

  • Gather more information about your medical condition. Discuss methods to resolve your breathlessness with your health care provider or a professional. Develop an action plan if your symptoms are worsening.
  • Dial 911 in case of an emergency with no one around to assist you.
