How long does bruising last after plastic surgery?
( 9 Apr 2010)

Plastic surgery is a field of cosmetic surgery where the appearance of a person or their skin can be changed. Plastic surgery has two main applications. Primarily, it is used as a method of repair or reconstruction.

Victims of burns tend to have ugly scarring on the skin which can also get infected. Plastic surgery is used in such a case to remedy the appearance of the affected person. Plastic surgery may also be used in the repair of damage caused by trauma such as an accident or a violent physical injury. Plastic surgery also has an application for people who wish to change their appearance or improve their physical appearance through such surgery. This is known as aesthetic surgery. Aesthetic surgery covers nearly the entire human body and could be performed to remove wrinkles, reshape features such as the nose or lips and augment features such as the breasts or the buttocks. It could also be used to remove surface imperfections that may be natural or caused by illnesses such as chicken pox which lead to scarring of the skin. Plastic surgery is controversial because of its application involving breast implants.

From a medical point of view, plastic surgery can be used to cure some issues regarding the appearance of an individual. This process might also help improve the function of the particular area that has been treated. Plastic surgery is also applied to other surgery specialties. Surgeons who are performing repair surgeries to hands might use plastic surgery techniques on the surface of the skin to maintain the normal appearance of the skin. In the case where an amputated limb or digit is being reattached, plastic surgery is the final stage where the joint area of the amputated part and the body is smoothed over. This may also improve functioning of the part that is reattached and will reduce scar tissue which may hinder movement.

Plastic surgery is also used to cure birth defects in children. Cleft is a common problem in underdeveloped countries and requires a simple surgery to be corrected. This is a useful way of avoiding the inconvenience of an ill-formed face as well as the social stigma associated with it.
The duration of recovery from plastic surgery depends entirely on the type of surgery performed. Most wounds heal within a few weeks and you can live normally without any extra care being taken. Some of the redness may last for up to a year in some cases. Your doctor will guide you as to the precautions you need to take. Generally, exposure to direct sunlight should be avoided for a few months after a plastic surgery procedure.
