A tooth abscess will not heal without medical treatment. A dentist, in most cases, will drain the pus out carefully and prescribe antibiotics in order to get rid of the bacterial infection. He may also prescribe pain killers depending on the severity of the abscess. In most cases, delayed visits to a dentist result in the need for root canal treatment, which is quite a painful procedure. When all else fails, the dentist may have to extract the infected tooth.

It is therefore important th    at you make an appointment with your dentist and in the meanwhile, you may use a few simple home remedies and suggestions to ease the pain and swelling caused by a tooth abscess.
  • Salt water gargles are one of the most effective remedies used in relieving pain and infection caused by tooth abscesses. For this purpose you may mix two teaspoons of common salt in a glass of warm water. Keep the solution in your mouth for 30 seconds before spitting it out; repeat this until the entire glass is empty. Salt contains calcium and iodine and apart from this, salt also possesses effective anti bacterial qualities that help in restricting the growth of bacteria present on the teeth and gums. Warm water provides the infected area with a soothing effect, and helps in relieving the accompanying pain.
  • For another useful remedy you can pack your affected tooth with a used tea bag. Tea contains catechins that are a type of antioxidant, which will help in relieving the pain and soothe your inflamed gums.
