Lemon juice and uric acid

In order to understand whether lemon juice is effective in treating uric acid it is important to understand - what is uric acid? And, what brings about this painful condition? A heterocyclic aromatic organic compound called purine that is present in many food products is broken down by the body for assimilation. During this process of breaking down purine, uric acid is left behind as a waste product. A high concentration of uric acid in the blood leads to a medical condition known as hyperuricemia, or high uric acid level. Uric acid is normally expelled out of the body through the passing of urine. Uric acid build up in the body leads to quite a few health conditions like kidney failure, gout problems and kidney stone problems, to name a few. In other conditions like heart diseases, chronic kidney diseases and high blood pressure, uric acid may serve an early warning or symptom.

Since uric acid is formed as a result of purine being broken down in the body, excessive consumption of foods rich in purine is the primary cause of this condition. Alcohol and caffeine products also lead to the formation of uric acid. There are several home remedies that one may use in order to normalize ones uric acid level. Lemon is one of nature’s most effective remedy when it comes to the treatment of various health conditions. Lemon juice is used in treating various health conditions like cardiovascular diseases, gout and COPD - chronic obstructive pulmonary disease to name a few. Lemon juice contains citric acid that dissolves uric acid - the primary cause of your condition. Lemon juice is abundant in vitamin C that is very effective in relieving sore joints and strengthening the connective tissues that get inflamed due to an increase in uric acid levels. Drinking lemon juice mixed with honey twice daily will help you experience effective results. However, this alone will not prove beneficial in bringing down the uric acid level in your body.

  • Strictly avoid consuming red meats, caffeine products, alcoholic beverages, processed and canned food, and fried and junk food while experiencing a bout of high uric acid level. These foods are rich in purine and will only worsen your condition.
  • Eat natural foods like raw vegetables, fresh fruits and sprouts. Fruits rich in vitamin C like oranges will be highly beneficial in helping you get rid of uric acid.
  • Drink plenty of water. Water helps in flushing out all the toxins from the body; therefore, it is imperative that you drink at least 3 liters of water daily.
