Symptoms of persistent cough are varied and many. A persistent cough is often an indicator of an underlying medical problem. A few symptoms of persistent cough include difficulty in breathing, shortness of breath and fever along with cough.

While these are the most common symptoms of persistent cough there are also other symptoms of persistent cough that could cause a lot of discomfort. Symptoms of persistent cough in children also include wheezing, chest pain or pain in the rib area, stuffy nose, and fussiness. Besides all of these the child may also experience watery eyes, rattling sound in the back portion of the throat or also in the chest wall and similar other conditions. The symptoms of persistent cough are likely to cause significant discomfort in adults and even more discomfort in children.

Persistent cough causes include:-

  • Airborne irritants can lead to coughing. This is more the case when the coughing is constant at night.
  • Seasonal changes could also give rise to a persistent cough. Children get an allergic reaction to environmental factors like pollen, dust and so on.
  • Croup and whooping cough are two other causes.
  • Asthma is one of the major causes of a persistent cough. It is characterized by a wheezing sound. Some children do not exhibit this symptom of asthma but could show others like difficulty in breathing or rapid breathing.
  • Bacterial infections could also lead to a persistent cough.
  • Aspiration: If your child has been coughing for more than a week with no other symptoms, it could indicate that your child has swallowed a small object.
  • Cystic Fibrosis- green or yellow mucus could be a sign of this genetic disease.
Home remedies that may help with an infant persistent cough are:-

  • Make a mixture of crushed pepper corns and clarified butter. Give this at least once a day.
  • A warm mist humidifier or a steam vaporizer can also be used to lessen the cough. Make sure the humidifier is clean and does not have any mould in it.
  • Create a steam room in your bathroom by putting on the hot water and allowing steam to build up. Let your child sit in this steam for 20 minutes. This will help with a persistent cough in a child.
  • A spoon of honey mixed with cardamom powder helps. Do not give honey to children less than a year old.
These remedies should help with in treating persistent cough in children.

Occassional coughs in children need not be treated. If the cough is repetitive, your child might be suffering from poor immunity. There are also chances of bronchitis. Check out with your paediatrician, as to whether she requires some bronchodilators. Some remedies are available at,

But, I would suggest you to identify the cause, before taking treatment.
