Dietary tips for chickenpox

Can a person consume drumstick when suffering from chickenpox?

You can have drumstick, provided you wash and boil it properly.

  • Maintain a healthy diet with a variety of nutritious foods including whole grains, beans, peas, fresh fruit and vegetables, lean meats and low fat dairy products.
    If appetite is poor; soups, broths and fresh vegetable and fruit juices are a good way to maintain calorie and nutrient intake.


  • Avoid refined sugars such as white flours (White flour based products) as they inhibit the activity of the immune system.
  • Avoid foods and drinks with added sugars, including soft drinks, fruit juices with added sugars, cordial etc. Pure fruit juices should always be diluted 50% with water. Try soft and less spicy foods, if you have blisters in mouth too.
  • Drink at least 6-8 glasses of water per day.

Include important nutrients like-

  • Vitamin A present in papaya, mangoes, spinach, yellow pumpkin helps resist infection and is also an essential nutrient for skin.
  • Vitamin C present in guava, orange, lime, sprouts also supports the immune system and helps fight viral infection.
  • Vitamin E, which is widely distributed in foods, helps prevent scarring of the skin.
  • Aloe Vera may help relieve itching and assist the skin to heal.
    Avoid stress and take rest to boost your immune system.
