A burn can occur due to variety of reasons which include damage from heat, chemicals, light radiation, fiction, cold and electricity. These burns can affect muscle, blood vessel, bone, epidermal tissue, nerve endings depending on how severe the burns are. Based on the extent of the damage caused, burns can be classified into; first, second and third degree burns.
First degree burns can be healed at home but second and third degree burns will need some form of medical attention. A severe burn can often cause shock, electrolyte imbalance, infection and sometimes respiratory disease. There are a number of remedies that you can use to treat burns and they can be done at home itself with the help of a number of every day use items. You can heal a burn by applying honey on it and then covering it with a bandage. Lavender oil is also a useful remedy for treating the pain caused by burns. Apply the oil on the burn a number of times during the day. The oil also helps with the healing of scars. Milk is also very useful as it contains fat. The fat is effective in soothing the pain caused by burns and healing the scar as well. All you have to do is soak the burn in some milk for about twenty minutes. Once done, make sure to wash the area with cold water. This will avoid the milk from smelling after it dries up on your skin.
When treating burns always make sure to; use water that is not very cold or hot as both extremities can kill more skin cells. When the water is cool it helps stop the burning sensation from moving through the tissues and hence serves the purpose of a temporary pain killer. Consume a considerable amount of vitamin C as it is very useful during the burn healing process. Good sources of vitamin C are citrus fruits like limes and oranges. Vegetables like potato and broccoli also contain a good amount of vitamin C. vitamin A and E are also very useful as it helps speed up the healing process. These vitamins can be found in foods like nuts, cereal, most green fruits and vegetables or in a supplement form. Finally, when treating burns avoid putting butter or Vaseline on the burnt area as it only traps the heat in the tissue and worsens the extent of the burn. The grease from butter or Vaseline also tends to serve as a breeding ground for infectious bacteria.
