An ovarian cyst is a pouch that starts to develop on or in the ovary. These cysts contain a certain amount of liquid or some solid material and sometimes a combination of both. These cysts are mostly common and occur in women who are aged between 30 and 60 years of age.
The ovaries can be of various types and thus depending on the type, they can be single or multiple and can possibly occur on one or both of the ovaries. Most types of ovaries are non- malignant, but a small portion of them are malignant and can be dangerous. Basically during the process of ovulation, the ovary produces a hormone that creates a follicle that grows and the eggs within them start to mature.
Once this egg mature the follicle ruptures and the egg gets released, this causes the follicle to change into a much smaller sac called the corpus leteum. The cyst actually occurs when the follicle fails to rupture or does not change size or ruptures itself. Depending on this there are various types of cysts; the first one is a functional cyst, endometrial cyst, cystadenomas and dermoid cysts, polycystic ovaries.
Based on what type of cyst you have ad the size of the cyst itself your treatment will vary. The best way to find this out is to consult your doctor who will be able to diagnose the kind of cyst you have and then recommend the right kind treatment. If the size if the cyst is less than two inches in diameter, the best method is to leave the cyst untouched and it will heal by itself. If the cyst is recurrent then the best remedy is the use of birth control or contraceptive pills. The pills basically help in reducing the hormones that promote the growth of the cysts and help in preventing larger cysts. If the cyst is polycystic then the doctor may prescribe medication to restore normal menstrual flow. For dermoid cysts and endometrial cysts, the best from of treatment is to surgically remove the cyst.
