Causes and Treatment on Herpes Simplex Virus
Herpes simplex virus, as the name indicates is caused by Herpes simplex viruses. Oral herpes is a result of herpes simplex virus 1. Oral herpes causes cold sores. Herpes infection of the genitals is also common.
The mode of transmission is due to sexual contact. They are generally seen in the inactive state in the trigeminal ganglia. This provides sensation and feeling to the lower mouth, neck and lips.
These viruses are also seen in a dormant state in the lumbrosacral region, which provides sensation to the upper legs, genitals and perineum. They are activated once again and infect the area of primary infection. Ultra violet rays, trauma, stress, wind, sun burn and surgery are some of the factors that trigger recurrence of infection. Immunity levels are enhanced in course of time to protect the system from recurrence and also decrease the frequency of infection. Herpes simplex viruses result in herpes gladiatorum, herpetic whitlow and ocular herpes. Neonatal herpes or herpes infection in infants are life threatening. It affects the central nervous system and can result in brain damage and thereby death. Several other serious disorders, such as Mollaret's meningitis, herpes encephalitis and Bell's palsy are alos seen to occur. In people with high immunity levels, it is not fatal.
