Not all spiders that you come in contact with are poisonous. Most of the spiders around our house are harmless since they eject only very small quantities of poison which do not affect a person upon being bitten. However, there is no way that a lay person could tell which spiders are poisonous and which are not.
Spiders like the black widow and the brown recluse are especially dangerous and you should keep an eye out for them in case they bite you. If you have a lot of spiders crawling in or around your home, it is best to familiarize yourself with some of the quick and effective home remedies to cure a spider bite rash.
A spider bite rash is usually the most common symptom of a spider bite. After a spider bites you and moves on, you may experience a raised rash which may ooze, crust and itch. The black widow spider and the recluse spider are usually responsible for more than half of the spider bites cases reported in the United States every year. The venom from a spider can cause a lot of pain, swelling and burning along with redness and inflammation. The spider bite rash is usually characterized by a double fang mark.
Here’s what you can do if a spider bites you:
- Apply cold water or ice to subside the burning sensations. This would give you immediate relief from the pain caused by the spider venom. You can apply an ice pack or simply use a washcloth soaked in cold water on the spider bite rash.
- One of the best home remedies for spider bites is baking soda. You could mix 3 parts of baking soda with 1 part of water and mix it to a pasty consistency. This would help in healing the spider bite process.
- Another great spider bite remedy is to keep the part of your body where the spider has bitten, elevated. This prevents the poison from spreading in the blood.
- Hydrogen peroxide can also be used to treat spider bite swelling. Washing with hydrogen peroxide can disinfect the wound, preventing the poison from penetrating into the skin and reaching the blood.
- You may use crushed basil on your wound. Simply take some crushed basil and rub it against the wound till it becomes powdery. This will prevent the wound from swelling up too much.
Normally spider bites are not very dangerous and can be taken care of at home; however if you notice anything unusual, consulting the doctor would be your best option.

Seek a doctor's advise on this one. Some spider bites can cause necrosis of the tissue. If the area doesn't look infected (red or puss) try using meat tenderizer. Just sprinkle it on. Ice would be great to bring down the swelling.
