Uterine Fibroids Treatment in Women

by Shaun Damon

Uterine fibroids are non cancerous growths which can be found inside the uterus. These fibroids are formed from muscles cells and tissues and usually grow within the walls of the uterus. Women who are in their child bearing age are usually affected by them.

In most cases, uterine fibroids do not cause any major problems. However, it is best to get these fibroids removed as they can present problems at a later stage in life. A regular check up with your gynecologist can help you find out whether your fibroids need to be removed immediately or the surgery can be deferred by a few years.

To treat uterine fibroids, the first step is to avoid consuming birth control pills which contain a high level of the hormone estrogen. If you have fibroids, the preferred method of contraception should be intra uterine devices or a diaphragm. If you have fibers in the sub mucous, it is best to only use diaphragms to avoid bleeding. You can also talk to the doctor about prescribing you agonists for gonadotropin releasing hormones. These will prevent the synthesis of estrogen, causing the fibroids to shrink.

It is important to keep visiting the gynecologist so that if a cancerous fibroid is growing, it can be seen and treatment can be given immediately. In case, you have a fast growing tumor in the uterus and it is pressing down on the reproductive tubes, it may have to be removed to prevent infertility. Usually, the fibroid can be removed. However, if the fibroid becomes too large, the uterus may have to be removed too.

A myomectomy may have to be performed if the fibroid has grown very large and has begun to cause pain and other symptoms. In some cases, where the fibroid has grown very large, a uterine artery embolization may be done in which the arteries that supply blood to these fibroids are blocked in order to contain the blood supply and subsequently shrink the fibroids. Women, who experience abnormal bleeding due to fibroids, are also recommended this kind of surgery. You can also opt for endometrial ablation, a procedure in which the lining of the uterus is removed, in case you are experiencing heavy menstrual flow due to the fibroids. Though hysterectomy is also a viable treatment option, you should get it done only if the fibroids have caused your uterus to grow very large, the fibroids have become cancerous or there is excessive bleeding due to the fibroids
