Why is Anxiety Worse in the Morning?

by Sharon Hopkins

Most people who suffer from anxiety disorders report that their anxiety in the morning is the worst. Waking up with a feeling of dread and a lack of interest in the day ahead are some of the signs. The spike of anxiety in the morning has been linked to high cortisol levels, a stress hormone that peaks shortly after you wake up. Another reason can be low levels of blood sugar when you wake up in the mornings. The brain requires glucose to fuel it and lesser levels of the same could cause anxiety. Also, sometimes the bedroom surroundings can make a bad situation worse. Things like an uncomfortable bed, unwanted noises, bad lighting, and a dark room can make you feel more anxious, and these are all small things that can be fixed.

Symptoms that you should Notice:

Some of the morning anxiety symptoms to watch out for are nervousness, a sense of foreboding and terror, weakness, giddiness, insomnia, increased heart rate, breathing problems, numbness in your hands, exhaustion, chest pain, shivering, breaking out with sweat or chills, confusion, and a sense of loss of control. Morning anxiety attacks are brought on by the prospect of having a feeling of uncertainty of things to come mingled with fear.

If you are anxious in the morning meet your doctor, and he/she will suggest morning anxiety treatment that will be suitable for you. The physician may suggest some lifestyle changes that could help you feel much better like sufficient sleep, controlled breathing, increased blood sugar, starting your day at a leisurely pace, awareness of what is causing the anxiety, and most of all trying to start your day with a positive frame of mind.

So how do you Deal with Morning Anxiety?

First, take a look at your sleep habits; insomnia and poor sleep patterns could lead to you waking up with lethargy, headaches, irritability, and lack of concentration. Try changing the way you sleep or the way your bed is positioned. If you still unable to sleep well, speak to you doctor who can give you some medication that will help you sleep better. Try to identify what triggers your anxiety in the morning. It could be due to rushing to work, waking up with a loud alarm clock, or a bright light coming in through your window. You can fix this by organizing your things for the next day, playing soft music, or changing your curtains to blinds. Another way to keep calm and is to start your day with some relaxation exercises. It could be yoga, meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, deep breathing, and visualization meditation.
