Thyroid Problems in Women

by Sam Malone

The thyroid gland is one of largest hormone glands in the body. This gland is a measure of how the body makes proteins and converts that protein into energy.

The primary thyroid disorders are either an overactive thyroid gland, known as hyperthyroidism or an underactive thyroid gland or hypothyroidism. In rare instances the gland could also see some extra growth called thyroid nodules. You should always get an excess or abnormal growth tested for cancer as thyroid cancer is not unheard of. Goitre is also a complication that can arise out of a malfunctioning thyroid.

This gland and its effective functioning play an important role, especially for women. Along with regular symptoms of an abnormal thyroid like anxiety, difficulty losing weight or losing weight too rapidly, stress and aches; women also suffer from an irregularity in their menstrual cycle. Continuous thyroid disruption can lead to autoimmune disorder like the Graves’ disease. Sometimes immune-suppressing conditions like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis can also target the thyroid gland.

The aim is usually to make sure that the thyroid gland works well so that the body’s metabolism works as it is supposed to. It is noticed that people with thyroid malfunctions may have weight issues – putting on weight, losing weight too quickly or not losing weight at all despite a concentrated effort. If you aren’t sure about the functioning of your thyroid, a simple blood test will determine whether or not you need medication.

There is allopathic medication which can help control the various hormones that control the functioning of the thyroid gland. But more and more people are choosing alternate methods of treatment.

There are some home remedies for thyroid problems in women but these are largely lifestyle changes and alternative or holistic treatments. There is no guarantee that these natural remedies will make any difference but there are enough success stories for people to turn to these remedies when conventional medication fails.

Some of the herbs that can make a difference are liquorice, bladder wrack and mountain ebony. The deficiency of iodine is a big cause of a malfunctioning thyroid. Bladder wrack is a rich source of iodine. Primrose oil and ginseng have also shown promise against thyroid issues.
Making dietary changes can help deal with thyroid problems. The more common problem is hypothyroidism. To remedy this, you need to include foods that include tyrosine. Include more chicken, yogurt, avocados, almonds, sesame seeds and fish in your diet. Include foods like oats, garlic, onion, tomatoes, strawberries and pineapples. If you can obtain some – spirulina, a natural alga is also good to combat thyroid issues. Avoid foods from the Brassicaceae family or cauliflowers, broccoli and Brussels sprouts. Also avoid foods like spinach and peanuts. If you have an underactive thyroid, you should avoid fruits like peaches and pears as they can suppress the thyroid. You should also avoid food that is high in iodine.

The aim should also be to eat food that is low on the glycemic index. Eating regularly and keeping your blood sugar normal also helps the metabolism to stabilise and help the thyroid to work better. It is also a good idea to avoid foods high in saturated fats or refined sugars. Avoiding stimulants like coffee is also important. The inclusion of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet can make a big difference to your thyroid condition. Often thyroid complications occur as a result of an underlying condition - like obesity.
