Skin Care for the Elderly

by Sam Malone

Everyone dreams of having beautiful, smooth and glowing skin. However since the skin is the outermost part of the body, it suffers some wear and tear as it protects the body against external stimuli, which could be harmful. Therefore healthy skin cannot be obtained, without taking proper skin care measures. Skin care steps differ from person to person, based on several factors, including the age.

Skin Care at 30

In order to main the shine and the glow in your skin, you need to start taking care of it right from an early age. If you do not have a routine for skin care at 30, now is the best time for you to start one. Some basic guidelines include the use of a moisturizer on a daily basis. Drinking at least 2 liters of water in the day and using anti-aging and eye creams, to delay wrinkles would also help. For those who are already following a skin care routine at the age of 30, this may be the best time for you to step it up to a higher level.

After 40

As you age, your skin will change, especially after the age of 40, as exposure to the sun and hormones add to skin dryness, flare ups and wrinkles. However, skin care after 40 need not be a challenge, with the numerous rejuvenating skin care products that are now available. Moreover, while the aging process cannot be reversed, it can be delayed by following certain measures and leading a healthy lifestyle. One could begin with a balanced diet, drinking a lot of water, getting adequate exercise, avoiding habits like drinking and smoking and protecting your skin from harmful factors like the sun, pollution and so on.

Elderly People

Skin care for elderly people may not be the easiest, as their skin may have certain requirements and concerns that should be recognized and then treated in the right way. Older people usually have skin that is quite dry. There is a very simple reason for that; our skin becomes thinner with age and as it thins, the skin retains less moisture. Therefore, if the skin does not have enough moisture, it becomes dry. In such cases, it is important to ensure that moisturizing creams and petroleum jelly are applied frequently. The best time to apply the moisturizer is after a bath, when the body is still moist. Moreover, older people are prone to certain medical conditions like diabetes, eczema, gangrene, varicose veins, pressure sores, allergies and infections and so on. These conditions could lead to various skin problems like spots, cracks and itchiness. Expert advice may be required to deal with skin problems that have been caused by such medical conditions.

If you notice any spots, a rash, bumps or severe itchiness on your skin, please consult a skin care specialist or a dermatologist without any delay.
