Home Remedies for Ulcerative Colitis

Posted in Category : Foods that Heal

Ulcerative colitis is a disease that causes the inflammation and sores in and around the lining of the colon and rectum. Ulcers will usually form when the inflammation has killed the cells that would usually line the colon which will then result in bleeding and the production of pus. Ulcerative colitis is very closely related to another condition called Crohn’s disease where the intestines are also inflamed. Both these conditions are frequently referred to as inflammatory bowel disease when grouped together. Both these conditions are rather common and affect almost half a million to two million people in the United States of America alone. While both sexes are affected equally, a person will most commonly be affected during the years of adolescence to the early stages of childhood. However, a small percentage of individuals may also experience the onset in the later stages in their lives. There are a number of prevalent theories in regards to the primary causes of the condition and while people affected also show signs of abnormalities in the immune system, research scientists are still unsure whether this is a direct result or a causing factor in the disease. However, studies have shown that ulcerative colitis is not caused or aggravated by any kind of distress or the sensitivity to certain foods or products. Some of the symptoms that show when affected by the condition include weight loss, anaemia, rectal bleeding, loss of appetite, skin lesions, loss of body fluids and nutrients as well as a noticeable failure in growth.

There are a number of home remedies that will help deal with the condition and make it more bearable. You could try a few of the following and pick one that is most convenient and effective on your body.

  • Since rice has a low fiber content it is extremely soothing when dealing with colitis. You could mix a glass of buttermilk to a thick gruel of rice and add a ripe banana. Have this twice a day as it forms a very nutritious and well balanced diet to fight the disease.
  • A daily intake of a glass of buttermilk is an extremely effective home remedy when dealing with any condition of the colon. While the daily consumption of the water extracted from a tender coconut can be equally effective.
  • A person suffering from this condition must make sure that he or she stays away from any citrus juices as well as increasing the intake of foods like raw papaya juice, carrot juice or even raw cabbage juice.
