Remedies for bad fish - food poisoning

Food poisoning is also called as food borne intoxication. This occurs due to the ingestion of food in which bacteria or parasites are produced, the consumption of which can poison the individual. Symptoms of food poisoning are abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and discomfort. Loss of body fluids and electrolytes can lead to headache, tiredness and dehydration.

Home remedies that can be considered to cure from food poisoning are:
  • Bed rest is essential. A complete bed rest with minimum activities will help the body in sweetening the recovery by killing the bacteria and parasites formed from the food poisoning.
  • Do not eat raw foods like fowl, fish, eggs, sausages. Do not test or try new foods or foods that are not tasting or looking right. Do not allow the frozen foods to remain at room temperature for more than two hours. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling raw meats, fish or eggs. Cooked foods should be covered, rapidly cooled and then transferred to refrigerator. The storage period of any food should not exceed a week.
  • Vomiting and diarrhea may lead to depletion of potassium supply from the body which can be life threatening. Hence have sports drink and bananas to replenish the potassium stores.
  • Drink herbal tea of mint, chamomile, raspberry and blackberry.
  • Place hot water bottle on the abdomen to relieve the cramps.
  • Mix 4 to 5 chopped basil leaves, 1\4 teaspoon sea salt, some pepper in 3 tablespoon curd. Have this regularly 4 times a day for one week.
However if symptoms still persists with the verge of weakness and discomfort, then consult a doctor.
