Is there a natural cure for gout?



Keep the following home remedies and dietary tips in mind for gout -

  • Losing weight if you are overweight will help to a greater extent if you are suffering from gout. Let this be a gradual process and target to lose ½ kg per week. Don't try fad diets for rapid weight loss as they can give rise to acute flare-ups of uric acid in the body.
  • High purine foods when consumed breaks down as uric acid in the body. So it is wise to avoid purine-rich foods. Foods that contain high purine include organ meats (liver, heart, and kidneys), fish (especially herring mackerel) meat, pork and other animal products. The gravies and broths from animal sources should also be avoided. However eggs and low fat dairy products can be consumed.
  • Pulses and beans contain moderate amount of purine and studies prove that vegan source of purine are not very harmful. Thus a serving of pulses and beans can be included in the diet
  • Alcohol should be completely eliminated as it not only contains purine but it also interferes with the body's excretion of uric acid. Beer is especially worst as it is rich in purines.
  • To flush excess uric acid from your system hydrate yourself well. Drink 2 to 3 liters of fluid each day in the form of water, herbal teas, vegetable juice, milk, unsweetened fruit juices and soup all contribute to your daily fluid intake.
  • Include 1 apple and 2 bananas day as they are considered helpful fruits for gout.
  • Lemon juice stimulates the formation of calcium carbonate in the body thereby prevents high uric acid flares.
  • Omega 3 fatty acids help to reduce joint inflammation and relieve pain. Vegetarian sources that can be included in the diet are hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds and flax seeds.
