Is there any natural cure for splitting fingernails?

Splitting fingernails is a prevalent problem among the ageing population. One of the causes of split fingernails is drying out of natural oils that keep the layers of the nails together; the loss of oils is attributed to the natural ageing process. Other causes include frequent washing of hands with harsh chemical-based agents, performing daily chores with bare hands, deficiency of certain vitamins, and dehydration. Some of the natural remedies that may be used as a cure for splitting fingernails are as follows:

  • Drink a lot of water and other fluids such as fruit juices to keep your body hydrated; this prevents your nails from getting dried up and consequently brittle.
  • One of the most effective treatment for splitting fingernails is to apply naturally greasy agents like avocado oil, jojoba oil, shea butter or castor oil on your hands and nails.
  • Include vitamins in your diet as these slow down the pace of ageing, thereby preventing your nails from drying and splitting. Also, you can apply vitamin E oil on your nails, or alternatively consume vitamin supplements.
  • Avoid washing your hands frequently and refrain from using harsh soaps and lotions. You must wear gloves while performing chores around the house.

Hydrating your body, moisturizing your nail enamel, and eating a balanced diet is the best way to help prevent splitting of nails.

Try soaking them in warm olive oil and take a calcium supplement daily or drink lots of milk or yogurt (milk products).  Never file your nails back and forth..only from the outside edge towards the center.
