Nongonococcal Urethritis

Can you contact NGU non sexually?

Nongonococcal urethritis or NGU refers to an infection of the tube through which the urine passes out of the body. This tube is known as the urethra. There may be various germs that may be responsible for this infection. The severity of the infection is determined by the type of germ that has caused it. A common cause of NGU is chlamydia. NGU can contribute to the occurrence of more serious health conditions such as pelvic pain, infertility and pelvic inflammatory disease. NGU is transmitted sexually. However, spread of the infection can occur through vaginal or anal contact, even if there has not been penetration or exchange of bodily fluids. The best way to prevent Nongonococcal urethritis is by using a condom.

Symptoms of Nongonococcal urethritis include abnormal vaginal or penile discharge, burning sensation during urination and itching. In women, if the symptoms become more serious, it is possible that the condition has progressed to pelvic inflammatory disease. The definition of NGU indicates that the infection of the urethra is not due to gonorrhea and hence the initial step is to rule out other causes of the condition. This could be done through a urine test known as NAAT. Once the diagnosis has been made, antibiotics may be administered. Depending on the severity of the condition, there may be a single dose or a course of tablets for a week. There must also be a follow up with the doctor to verify if the infection has gone. Early treatment is very important in cases of NGU. The individual should also refrain from any sexual contact until the treatment has been completed.

Some natural remedies are believed to be effective in treating NGU. Garlic has anti-microbial properties and hence must be incorporated into the diet to prevent infection and inflammation. You may also prepare a tonic made with garlic and drink everyday to treat NGU. Add some mashed garlic to boiling water and drink once the solution cools down. It is also advisable to add ginger to meals as it helps to boost immunity. This will enable the body to fight infections well. The antibiotic medication that is normally administered for NGU is quite strong and hence it is essential to keep the body well nourished so that side effects are not experienced. Refrain from eating processed foods made of refined sugar and white flour. Consume more fresh foods such as salads, fish and lean chicken.
