Toothaches are a common condition that most of us experience at some point of time. Toothaches are generally a mild condition, but can often be a symptom of a more serious dental problem that will worsen if neglected. Timely intervention is the key to treatment of any dental health problem. Most minor toothaches can be treated effectively at home itself with some simple home remedies and over the counter medications. Treatments that only provide relief and do not actually treat or cure the underlying cause will only help to cope with the problem, but if relied on as the only solution will worsen the problem. Determining the cause of the toothache is therefore an important step towards treating and curing the condition. Some of the most common causes of toothaches are gum problems, tooth decay, and an abscess or infected tooth. An abscess is an accumulation of pus that forms due to an infection in the center of the tooth. Another frequent cause of toothaches is an impacted tooth, which is a tooth that fails to emerge completely from the gums.

There are numerous home remedies and herbal remedies that you can try to help cope with the condition. The cloves and turmeric remedies that you mention are both very popular and quite effective. Leave the application on for at least ten to fifteen minutes before gargling. The degree of effectiveness of some home remedies may vary, and if the problem still persists it would be a good idea to visit a dentist. An abscess can not be treated with home remedies alone and there may be a lingering infection. In such cases even the best natural home remedy will only bring temporary relief. Moreover, there would be a serious risk of the infection spreading to the other teeth.

Peel a clove of fresh garlic and grind it to a paste. Mix the garlic paste with an equal amount of peanut butter. Use the mixture as an oral application and apply it to the aching tooth at least twice a day. As with the turmeric and cloves application that you have been using, leave it on for at least ten to fifteen minutes. Another useful home remedy that will provide relief from the toothache requires lemons and asafetida powder. Squeeze out the lime juice and add some of the asafetida powder to it. Soak a swab of cotton in the liquid and keep it placed against the area of tooth and gum that is affected. This will provide quick and instant relief from the pain.
