What are hemorrhoids?

The term hemorrhoids refers to an unnatural swelling of the veins around the anal opening. Sometimes, the swelling is so pronounced that it feels like a small hard ball that is present all the time in the crevice of your anus. Hemorrhoids can be internal, which means that the swelling can be inside the anus and remain inside. They can also be external. This would mean that the swelling has reached the outside of the anus and can be felt as an external presence. It is important to note that this is a swelling, and not something that is stuck or has been added, which is usually how it would feel. There can be many causes of hemorrhoids. The commonest one is hard stools, which lead to excessive straining. The straining can actually cause the nerve endings to swell up and cause you tremendous pain. Among the other causes of hemorrhoids are delivering a baby naturally, age, constipation, diarrhea or anal intercourse.

There are various ways to take care of hemorrhoids. You can use products you have to apply to ease the pain and help with healing. These would include witch hazel, which is considered particularly useful in treating hemorrhoids. Alternately, you can also use aloe vera gel, which is known to not only heal all manner of wounds and inflammation; it also has cooling properties which will provide momentary relief. The other method to take care of hemorrhoids is to ensure that you have soft stools which do not make you strain. This is especially important, because every time you strain to pass a motion, your hemorrhoids will get completely aggravated otherwise, thus making the situation worse. You can ensure that you have easy motions by consuming a high fiber diet and making sure you stay away from processed foods.
