Alternative cures for cold

For a feeding mom, I would ideally suggest remedies that do not involve ingesting anything that may pass to the baby through breast milk, unless such a thing is beneficial. Most of the remedies I am suggesting here are external and will not affect your baby in any way.

  • Take a hot shower or use a vaporizer to inhale steam. A little bit of Vicks Vaporub can be added to water in the vaporizer for greater effect.
  • If you cannot get to sleep because of a blocked nose, try sleeping to one side. Sometimes this causes one nostril to open up, so you are able to breathe a little more freely.
  • You can make up a nasal spray by adding some adding one pinch of baking soda and half a teaspoon of salt to a cup of water. You can then use a bulb syringe to spray the solution into your nose.
  • Take fruit and vegetables rich in Vitamin C. Vitamin C is daid to reduce the duration of viral infections
  • You can drink some ginger tea
  • Get some rest. It will help boost your immune system and will help you get rid of the infection faster.

Try and wash your hands frequently and cough or sneeze into a hanky that you keep away from your child. These measures may help prevent him/her getting the cold from you.
